PURPOSE
Because the Algiers story is often left out of the New Orleans historical narrative, Algiers will celebrate its Tricentennial in 2019. The goal is to tell the story of Algiers - from its beginnings in 1719 to the War of 1812, to the rail and maritime industries in the early 19th century to the varied communities that comprise Algiers today. The celebration is about building pride in Algiers, educating and entertaining people through our culture and creating oral histories that will remain forever.
As we honor our past, we can inspire our future through economic, educational and cultural programs and advocating for appropriate development in communities throughout Algiers.

EVENTS
Several public events and activities are being planned. Some of the major ones are as follows:
  • Zulu in Algiers - 2019 King Zulu and Algiers native George Rainey will hold a "flag raising" ceremony and reign over a special day of fun being planned for February 2, 2019, near the ferry terminal in Old Algiers.

  • NOMTOC Parade - Activities are being planned during the annual NOMTOC parade, the only remaining Algiers Mardi Gras parade, to celebrate and raise awareness of Algiers cultural history. March 2, 2019.

  • Jazz Walk of Fame - Algiers Point Association will unveil the upgraded Jazz Walk of Fame along the riverfront in Old Algiers. Scheduled for spring 2019.

  • Trans-Atlantic Slave Marker Ceremony and Installation - Old Algiers Main Street Corporation will host an event in commemoration of the thousands of enslaved Africans who disembarked on the riverfront in Old Algiers.
OTHER PROGRAMS
  • New Orleans Historical App - In partnership with the University of New Orleans, the Algiers page of this mobile app will provide information on and points of interest. Suggestions and content are welcome. Launch in January 2019.

City Encourages Residents to Recycle ChristmasTrees for Coastal Restoration
NEW ORLEANS - Mayor LaToya Cantrell today reminded residents that the City will continue its program of recycling Christmas trees in an effort to promote the restoration of Louisiana's wetlands and to assist in the protection of the Louisiana coastline. Orleans Parish residents, eligible for collection by the City, are encouraged to recycle their Christmas trees by placing them curbside, before 5 a.m., on their regularly scheduled second collection day that occurs between Jan. 10-12, 2019, for properties served by Richard's Disposal and Metro Services. Properties in the French Quarter or DDD, served by Empire Services, should place their trees curbside before 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019.

Only natural, unflocked trees that are free of all stands and trimming (all ornaments, tinsel, lights and tree stands must be removed by the citizens) can be recycled. Flocked, artificial trees, trees in bags or trees with trimming that has not been removed will be collected with garbage and transported to the landfill. Trees are not to be placed on the neutral grounds, as this delays the collection process.

The City's Department of Sanitation along with its solid waste contractors Metro Services, Richard's Disposal and Empire Services; the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability; and Leaaf Environmental are working together to collect, sort and bundle the trees, which will be placed in selected coastal zones.

This project is funded by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability. In 2018, more than 8,000 Christmas trees were collected in Orleans Parish after the holidays and airlifted by the Louisiana National Guard into the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge as part of a program to create new marsh habitat.

Residents seeking more information should call NOLA 3-1-1.

NEW ORLEANS--  Over time, you've probably heard of the New Year's tradition to cook and eat black eyed peas.  Do you know why the tradition even started in the first place?
News with a Twist Reporter Kenny Lopez went to the New Orleans School of Cookingand talked with chef Anne Leonhard about the black eyed peas tradition.
"In November of 1864 during the Civil War there was a march to sea and everything was destroyed.  All that was left behind was the black eyed peas.  At the time the black eyed peas were considered trash food.  Trash food for livestock to eat.  When the troops left the region, all that was left to eat were black eyed peas, so they began cooking and eating them. This was good luck for the troops, so they wouldn't starve.  They had the black eyed peas to eat.  That became the popular thing to eat," Leonhard said.
By eating them now they are a symbol of prosperity for a new year.
"Black eyed peas are supposed to resemble coins and coins mean prosperity," she said.
So black eyed peas signify coins and Leonhard said that greens represent dollar bills, and corn bread represents gold.  These are all symbols of prosperity.

Wednesday Night Flight, January 9, 5:30-7:30 - It has been said that Sangiovese, the soul of Tuscan wine, gets its name from the Latin sanguis (blood) jovis (the Roman God Jupiter). Join Erin and Uznea for a celebration of the grape with wines from Italy, Corsica and California - we'll feature a sparkling rosé and 3 delicious reds!  If you'd like a little something to snack on with your wine, resident cheesemonger Casey Foote will select and present a pairing plate ($10 with flight, $15 without the flight). No standing in line for our Wednesday flights - you sit at a table, we come to you and pour tableside complete with lots of educational info on what you are drinking. The flight of 4 wines is $20 - reservations are highly recommended as we can only seat walk-ins if space allows. Marian Enochs Gay Leads Session-

"An Introduction to Natural Dreamwork"

METAIRIE, LA - Marian Enochs Gay, a certified natural dreamwork practitioner, will present "An Introduction to Natural Dreamwork," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

The presentation is free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required.

Natural Dreamwork is a process of working with dreams for personal and spiritual growth. It has roots in Jung's basic approach towards dreams as a very natural experience. Instead of seeing dreams as riddles to be solved, the emphasis is always on what the dreamer feels in the dream. The feelings in dreams are compressed into the images and presences we encounter.

"Do you feel curious about your dreams, moved by them?" asks Gay. "Or perhaps scared or baffled? Dreams bring natural healing and wisdom all our lives, but how to receive this?"

Marian Enochs Gay is a certified natural dreamwork practitioner offering a contemplative approach to dreams for healing, growth, and wholeness. Her own dream journey began in 2009 with teacher Rodger Kamenetz, and she has worked with clients since 2014.

For more information regarding this presentation, contact Chris Smith, manager of Adult Programming for the library, at (504) 889-8143 or wcsmith@jefferson.lib.la.us

NEW ORLEANS, LA- Will Samuels, owner of "King Cake Hub by Pizza Nola", announced today that the new retail King Cake shop will be based at the Mystère Mansion, home of the Mortuary Haunted House, at 4800 Canal St in Mid-City.

"We are so excited to partner with one of New Orleans' iconic historical institutions to sell one of the city's most iconic treats," said Samuels. He continued, "Folks come from around the world to experience this legendary haunted mansion and innovative escape rooms and it is an honor to be sharing the space with this Mid-City landmark."

The King Cake Hub will feature over 28 flavors of king cakes from around New Orleans and Southeast Louisiana's favorite bakeries including serving as the exclusive Orleans Parish outlet for the legendary King of King Cakes, Gambino's Bakery (which is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2019). The King Cake Hub will also be the exclusive New Orleans distributor for Cannata's King Cakes (based out of Houma and Morgan City) and will carry king cakes from such area favorites as Hi-Do Bakery, Bywater Bakery  and Girls Gone Vegan. The King cake Hub will also feature its own creation: the Epiphany King Cake, developed in partnership with Gambino's Bakery and described as "a classic dough honoring 70 years of Carnival tradition topped with your new favorite cream cheese icing."

Samuels also announced a new partnership with the Culinary Arts program at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA). "NOCCA has one of the city's most creative King Cakes and we look forward to the opportunity to help support their program," said Samuels. NOCCA's Satsuma Almond King Cake is described by the school as "a flaky puff pastry with rich almond paste and cream cheese filled with a bright, refreshing, citrus filling using satsumas supplied by our partners at Press Street Gardens." The king cake will be available daily at the King Cake Hub, although pre-ordering from KingCakeHub.com is recommended.

NOCCA will also contribute a king cake to the King Cake Coterie, the exclusive King Cake of the Week club being offered by pre-sale only until December 31, 2018. Each week members of the Coterie will receive a specialty King Cake by one of the top bakers in the area made exclusively for the Coterie. Membership in the King Cake Coterie is limited to 200. NOCCA's selection will be a "Purple, Green and Gold"- a twist off the traditional Galette de Rios with a golden puff pastry, blueberry compote, lime cream cheese and almond pecan fillings.
King Cake Hub will launch with a Carnival Kickoff event on Sunday, January 6, 2019 from 8am-10am featuring Benny Grunch and the Bunch, Panorama Brass Band, Professor Carl Nivale and other special guests culminating with the cutting of the first piece of king cake of Carnival.
