Kali Malone + Left Hand Cuts Off The Right

No Longer Available

Kali Malone is an American artist living and working in Stockholm, Sweden since 2012. Her solo works implement unique tuning systems in minimalist form for analog and digital synthesis often combined with acoustic instrumentation - such as pipe organ, string and wind instruments, lute and gong. Malone’s 2017 debut LP “Velocity of Sleep” was released on her own label XKatedral following tape releases put out by Ascetic House, Bleak Environment and Total Black. She is active in the groups Sorrowing Christ, Swap Babies, Upper Glossa with Caterina Barbieri, and with techno producer Acronym. She has performed most notably at Berlin Atonal and Norberg Festival.

Kali Malone’s sophomore LP “Cast of Mind” (due spring 2018 on Hallow Ground) investigates the use of harmony as a force of psychological impact through the exclusive use of the Buchla 200 synthesizer in combination with acoustic woodwind and brass instruments. The record begins as a cascade of battle calls from the wind instruments that shift ephemerally between triumphant and anguished howls upon each exhale. While the other pieces pull from the septimal harmonic framework of the title track, they extract a more confined palate to depict their sonic identities indicated by the song titles. “Bondage To Formula” weaves synthesis, trombone and bass clarinet in a delicate pattern, conjuring an ambiguous assimilation of the acoustic and synthetic. Dominated by columns of sawtooth waveforms, “Arched In Hysteria” unravels as a sharp and sober harmony perched on the border of violence, ringing in paranoia amongst a foundation of low beating oscillators. The record concludes in the rapture of “Empty The Belief”, swollen with undulating bassoon striving to intonate to the towering stability of machine generated harmony. Using justly tuned synthetic and acoustic instrumentation, Cast of Mind’s rich harmonic textures emit a distinct emotive hue serving to generate a static and captivating depth of focus.

Kali Malone’s “Organ Dirges 2016 - 2017” (due spring 2018 on Ascetic House) is a collection of isorhythmic canons following the tradition of pipe organ requiems found in early modern music. Malone’s purified organ dirges echo embodied recollections of the piercing numbness of those battled encounters when the armours were stripped down, left with nothing other than will power, yet still standing upright as the columns of Sounion. The soothing and perceptive harmonies resonate to a presence that leans elegantly towards a courageous aftermath and a gleaming salutation. While the dirges themselves have minimal melodic and rhythmic variation, they appear in constant cyclical motion, revealing their refracted selves in a coherent yet unpredictable manner; like a rotating wheel where all spokes are perceptible but at any given moment in a different place.

Left Hand Cuts Off The Right

Left Hand Cuts off the Right (Robbie Judkins) is an outlet for exploratory methods and composition. During live performances Robbie plays with a zither, bent electronics, objects, field recordings, loops and effects. The sounds are of habitual drones, gear-grinding metallic buzzing, crackling rhythms and aural oddities. Compositions and improvisations reflect on work and labour and the creation of sound as therapy.

In April 2023 he released, Free Time/Dead Time (Brachliegen Tapes), an album of focused minimalism, experimental electronics and twitching musique concrete. Free Time/Dead Time is a series of meditative compositions that reflect on the precarious boundaries between labour, leisure, and the quality of lived experience under late-capitalism.

"The freshness of Judkins's restrained approach is felt in an enjoyably weird atmospheric balance between sustained calm and sticky anxiety." The Wire

“Hardcore yoga music” The Quietus

He has created works for the Barbican, ICA, Resonance FM, Turner Contemporary, Whitechapel Gallery, University of Central Lancashire, Supernormal Festival and more. He is also the creator of Animal Sounds (Resonance FM), Parallax View (Threads Radio) and ex-member of punk-noise band Bruxa Maria.
