This week, at the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, CRS regional Director Matt Davis spoke at the launch of the revised African Union Great Green Wall Initiative Strategy Strategy and Ten-Year Implementation Framework: Enhancing ecosystems restoration and livelihoods resilience (2024-2034). What is the Great Green Wall Initiative? The Great Green Wall initiative started in 2007 to respond to desertification in the Sahel and Sahara. This new framework builds on lessons learned in restoring degraded lands in these countries and is a continent-wide initiative. The Great Green Wall Initiative 2.0—an Africa-owned-and-led initiative—adopts a multi-stakeholder, multi-sector, and multi-scale approach, strengthening policy alignment and cohesion, technical challenges, and funding hurdles. The Great Green Wall goes beyond merely planting trees 🌳; it represents a powerful movement addressing critical challenges such as climate change, desertification, and poverty. It aims to create a beautiful patchwork of lush and productive landscapes across North Africa, the Sahel, and the Horn. In doing so, it carries immense potential to benefit Africa and the entire world. Here are the key aspects of the Great Green Wall: Objective: The initiative seeks to restore 100 million hectares of currently degraded land, sequester 250 million tons of carbon, and create 10 million green jobs by 2030. By doing so, it aims to help communities living along the Wall by providing: ➡️ Fertile land: One of humanity’s most precious natural assets. ➡️ Economic opportunities: Especially for the world’s youngest population. ➡️ Food security: Addressing hunger in the region. ➡️ Climate resilience: Vital in a region where temperatures are rising faster than anywhere else on Earth See the Great Green Wall Initiative Strategy and Ten-Year Implementation Framework (2024-2034) ⬇️. #AFSH24 USAID Feed the Future
