CORE hosts the world’s largest collection of open access full texts, offering seamless, unrestricted access to research for citizens, researchers, libraries, software developers, funders and others. CORE’s aggregated content comes from thousands of institutional and subject repositories as well as journals and covers all research disciplines. In January 2019, CORE has hit the mark of 10 million monthly active users (10.41 million users). In September 2019, core.ac.uk has made it to the top 5k websites globally by user engagement as measured by the independent Alexa Rank, making it clearly one of the world’s most widely used Open Access services.
In this talk, Petr and Nancy will explain the role of CORE in the open science ecosystem. They will introduce the solutions CORE offers for improving the delivery of research literature, including tools for discovering freely available copies of papers that might be behind publishers’ paywalls as well as a recommender system for open access literature. The use of CORE data to monitor compliance with open access policies has also recently received attention. The presenters will then reflect on the challenges in the sector and share their experience of building value-added services for the society on top of open content offered by libraries and their affiliated institutional repositories and open access journals.

Petr Knoth Senior Research Fellow in Text and Data Mining CORE |
I lead an R&D team working in the domains of text-mining, digital libraries and open access/science. I am the founder, product and team leader for CORE, which is a service that aggregates millions of open access articles from around the world and makes them available for people to search and machines to text-mine.
Previously, I worked as a Senior Data Scientist at Mendeley on information extraction and content recommendation for research. I have a deep interest in the use of AI to improve research workflows. I have co-founded Semantometrics.org which aim to go beyond bibliometrics and altmetrics to produce new research evaluation methods that make use of the publication full-texts in research assessment.
I have been involved as a researcher and as a PI in a number of European Commission, national and international funded research projects in the areas of text-mining, open science and eLearning.

Nancy Pontika Open Access Aggregation Officer CORE |
Nancy Pontika holds a PhD in Open Access from the School of Library and Information Science at Simmons University in Boston, MA, USA. Her main areas of interests are open access, open science, responsible research and innovation and the role of text and data mining of open-access scientific literature. She advocates for open access, machine access to open-access research papers, and the promotion of open science for the advancement of research. She is currently the Open Access Aggregation Officer at CORE (https://core.ac.uk), a service aggregating millions of open-access research papers. She has previously worked as an Open Access Adviser and Project Coordinator at the Repositories Support Project (RSP) and as a repository manager at Royal Holloway, University of London. She has been involved in five European projects, FOSTER and FOSTER Plus (https://www.fosteropenscience.eu), OpenMinTeD (http://openminted.eu), FIT4RRI (http://fit4rri.eu/), and ON-MERRIT. She also serves as the Editor of the Open Access Directory (http://oad.simmons.edu), and a contributing tagger for the Open Access Tracking Project (http://bit.ly/o-a-t-p).
Learning outcomes
After this webinar attendees will be able to:
- Identify helpful tools that could assist them with identifying a large volume of open access content
- Reference librarians would be in position to assist further their users
- ILL librarians would be in position to save money and time by easily discovering an open access version of an article
- Repository managers will see how they can increase the average time users spend on the repository pages.
